For many, Christmas is a time to gather with loved ones, share meals and reflect on the year. However, for some older Victorians, the festive season can heighten feelings of social isolation.
Balwyn Evergreen Centre, a community centre dedicated to ensuring that older individuals stay active, healthy and socially connected, is hosting its Evergreen Community Group annual Christmas Lunch on December 11, offering community, conversation and a delicious meal to seniors who might otherwise spend the day alone.
Rodney Con Foo, a retiree and Balwyn Evergreen volunteer, is leading the kitchen this year with a menu designed to evoke nostalgia and celebration. Guests will enjoy roasted turkey with sage and prune stuffing, glazed smoked ham, roasted root vegetables and a classic Christmas pudding topped with crème anglaise and ice cream. Because he doesn’t do things by halves, Rodney is also cooking the volunteer Christmas lunch the following day.
“Christmas is a time for catching up with friends and family, and often reminds us of great times past,” said Rodney.
“Cooking this traditional meal gives me an opportunity to spread joy and reminisce about the happy Christmases of my childhood. My mother always put so much effort into making the day memorable, and I am excited to bring that same spirit to our guests this year.”
Rodney also emphasised the personal fulfilment he gains from volunteering.
“Seeing the smiles on their faces and knowing that I’ve played a small part in making their Christmas special is incredibly rewarding. It’s a reminder of how simple gestures can make a profound impact.”
Rodney supports Balwyn Evergreen Social Support Individual Coordinator and Program Coordinator for the Wednesday Community Group, Lotana Motuku, who has spent six years contributing to Balwyn Evergreen's mission of connection and care.
While Lotana traditionally celebrates Christmas Eve with her family and community in her home islands of Wallis and Futuna, she recognises the importance of supporting older Victorians, particularly during the festive season.
“In my culture, no one is alone on Christmas Day,” Lotana says.
“It’s heartbreaking to hear stories of people spending Christmas with just a frozen meal and a movie. It’s about making sure no one feels forgotten.”
Lotana also reflected on the sense of community events like these create.
“When we come together to share a meal, it’s not just about the food. It’s about connection, laughter, and showing that we care. That’s what Christmas is truly about.”
For Balwyn Evergreen Centre CEO Tina Hogarth-Clarke, the Christmas Lunch is a cornerstone of the organisation’s commitment to fostering connection and combating social isolation.
“Older Victorians can be particularly vulnerable to loneliness during the holidays,” said Tina.
“Events such as this, not only offer companionship but also remind our guests that they are cherished members of the community. This would not be possible without incredible people such as Rodney and Lotana, who embody the true spirit of Christmas through their generosity and care."
“When we create spaces for our seniors to feel valued and connected, we’re building a stronger, more compassionate community. It’s a beautiful example of what can happen when people come together with kindness and purpose.”
