International Migrants Day (December 18) provides an opportunity to reflect on the rich cultural diversity that defines Australia and to celebrate the invaluable contributions of migrants to the community.

At the heart of this celebration is the Balwyn Evergreen Centre, a thriving hub that welcomes people from all backgrounds to connect, learn and share in a variety of activities.

For many, Balwyn Evergreen offers a sense of belonging and purpose. Sew Sharma, a retired nurse who migrated from Malaysia in 1968, exemplifies the spirit of community fostered by the Centre.

She’s part of the Boroondara Chinese Senior Citizens Association (BCSCA), which meets weekly at Balwyn Evergreen.

“It’s important to have a melting pot of cultures because it represents the multi-racial mix of our population,” Sew said.

“It enhances understanding, tolerance, cooperation and friendships among people from different backgrounds. The Balwyn Evergreen Centre feels like a second home.”

Sew, now 74, is an integral part of Balwyn Evergreen’s community. As a line-dancing teacher for the BCSCA, she has inspired students to find joy and confidence through dance.

“It’s been a joy to watch my students, many of whom had no prior dancing experience, master steps and perform. It boosts their self-esteem and promotes a sense of achievement,” she said.

“I sometimes incorporate Chinese music into our routines to connect with our non-English-speaking members, which makes the performances even more meaningful.”

BCSCA President Victor Wong, highlighted the role of organisations like these in fostering inclusivity.

“The Centre offers a unique space for seniors to connect and stay active, while embracing and sharing their cultural heritage.” Victor said.

Balwyn Evergreen’s focus on inclusivity is central to its mission. From Tai Chi to guest speaker presentations and excursions, Balwyn Evergreen offers something for everyone.

“We’re proud to be a place where people can celebrate their cultures while building friendships that transcend language and cultural barriers,” said Balwyn Evergreen CEO Tina Hogarth-Clarke.

“Migrants bring invaluable contributions to our community, and we are privileged to witness the strength and vibrancy they bring.”

This International Migrants Day, Balwyn Evergreen honours the journeys, resilience and cultural contributions of migrants who have shaped Australia’s identity.
