If you thought that generational friendships are rare, think again. The Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) shines as a source of genuine companionship and support.

This impactful program, which connects volunteers with older individuals seeking social interaction, has brought joy and meaning to many lives. Among these inspiring stories is the special bond between Kathleen and Lyn.

Kathleen, a spirited 93-year-old, has always cherished the moments spent with her family and friends. However, as the years passed, the visits became less frequent.  That’s when she discovered the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme, a program dedicated to bringing joy and connection to the older people.

Enter Lyn, a dedicated volunteer from the Balwyn Evergreen Centre. With her warm smile and genuine compassion, Lyn has become more than just a visitor to Kathleen; she has become a dear friend. "From the moment I met Kathleen, I knew we were going to be great friends," Lyn says. "Her stories are fascinating, and her zest for life is truly inspiring."

Every two weeks, they go out for coffee, bringing with her not only engaging conversation and laughter but also a sense of belonging and care. "I really enjoy Lyn’s visits.

Lyn, who has been volunteering for more than three years, feels equally blessed by the experience. "I started volunteering because I wanted to give back to the community, but I’ve gained so much more than I ever imagined. Kathleen has taught me the value of patience, resilience and the simple joys of life."

Despite their age difference, Kathleen and Lyn have found common ground in their shared stories and mutual respect. "Whether we’re reminiscing about the past or discussing future plans, our conversations are filled with warmth and laughter.  Kathleen has become an important part of my life." Lyn says.

The Balwyn Evergreen Centre plays a crucial role in facilitating such meaningful relationships through the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme. This program not only combats loneliness among older people but also enriches the lives of volunteers like Lyn. "The support from Balwyn Evergreen Centre has been incredible. They make it easy for us to connect and build these beautiful friendships."

For those inspired by Kathleen and Lyn’s story and interested in making a difference, becoming a volunteer is a rewarding and fulfilling experience. The Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme at the Balwyn Evergreen Centre is always looking for compassionate individuals to join their team.

Lyn says, "Volunteering has given me a sense of purpose and joy and knowing that I can make a positive impact in someone's life is incredibly fulfilling."

And for Kathleen, the sentiment is mutual. "Lyn has brought happiness into my life and I enjoy her company.”

"Kathleen and Lyn's bond through the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme exemplifies the power of human connection across generations," says Tina Hogarth-Clarke, CEO, Balwyn Evergreen Centre.

"Their story highlights the immense impact volunteers like Lyn have on the lives of our older community members. For Loneliness Awareness Week, we encourage more individuals to join us in spreading joy and companionship - Balwyn Evergreen Centre is always in need of more volunteers."

"Social isolation and loneliness are significant challenges for many older Victorians. A simple cuppa or chat can make the world of difference to the lives of our seniors. By volunteering, you can help brighten someone’s day and build a meaningful connection."
